Catriona was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She
attended the Saskatoon French School and Holy Cross High
School and started skating as a member of the Saskatoon
Lions Speed Skating Club. She has had a very successful
speed skating career, beginning as a junior competitor
in 1985. In 1988, Catriona moved to Calgary to join the
Canadian Speed Skating Team and train at the Olympic
Oval. Here are just a few highlights from her impressive
speed skating career.
Catriona LeMay Doan is the fastest woman on ice. After
carrying the Canadian flag into the 2002 Winter Olympic
Games opening ceremonies Catriona defended her Olympic
title with a Gold medal performance in the 500m. With
this victory, she became the first individual Canadian
to win back-to-back Gold medals in the same event at the
Olympics. Plus, she skated an Olympic record time of
37.30 seconds in race one of the two-day competition.
Catriona has broken the 500m world record eight times
and earlier in the 2002 season she set the world record
at 37.22 seconds. Catriona placed first overall in the
2001/2002 season, her fifth first place finish. She was
named the Canadian Female Athlete of the Year in 2001
and 2002, and received the Lou Marsh Award as Canadian
Athlete of the Year in 2002.
Catriona retired from competitive speed skating on May
22, 2003, but her retirement hasn't slowed her down. She
is very involved in a number of charities including
Right to Play, Breast Cancer and the Spina Bifida and
Hydrocephalus Association of Canada. Catriona is also a
liaison at the Olympic Oval in Calgary, and involved in
the 2010 Winter Games in Whistler. She is a popular
public speaker and sports broadcaster, and is also
raising a family with her husband Bart. In May 2004 her
first child, Greta, was born.
In January 2004, she was honoured at a Catriona Tribute
in Saskatoon, and in November 2005, Catriona will be
inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.
